Ian Johnson has noticed a rise in the popularity of American-style barbecue meat.

Mr Johnson’s business, Melville Heights Meat Supply, has been named as a finalist in the Australasian Barbecue Alliance Butchery of the Year people's choice award.

The Melville butcher will go up against 10 other finalists for the national award in Victoria on October 19.

“The American barbecue trend is just growing, we are seeing people come in for briskets, pork shoulder and beef ribs,” he said.

“I think the popularity comes from how good the meat is, everything we have here is WA produce.”

Mr Johnson said being a finalist in the award was rewarding.

“I believe we were nominated by a member of the public,” he said.

“I think the secret is quality meat and old fashioned butchering, I’d encourage everyone to support their local butcher.”

The other WA finalists are Warnbro Quality Meats, Troy’s Meats in Balcatta and Fremantle’s Char Char Char.
