Gardening jobs for April

Gardening jobs for April

With cooler nights and shorter days here in Perth, April is a fantastic time to plant vegetables, herbs and flowers in your garden. Here’s a list of jobs you should aim to complete in your garden this month:

  • Vegetables that are ideal to plant this month include leeks, onions, spinach, spring onions, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and shallots.
  • With the cooler nights and milder sun during the day, you can most likely get away with reducing the amount of time you are watering your gardens and lawn.
  • Add some colour to your garden by planting snapdragons, pansies, sweet peas and violas.
  • April is also a great time to plant native trees such as banksia, wattle and bottlebrush.
  • With winter approaching, now is a great time to plant parsley which you can use throughout winter in hearty casseroles and soups.
  • If you have lavender or rosemary in your garden, now is the time to prune them back.
  • With leaves falling from trees, make sure to rake up and remove them regularly so that your lawn does not die.
  • If your lillypilly has lumps on its leaves, prune the affected areas, fertilise the tree and water well.
  • If you have roses, don’t prune them yet – leave this until winter.
  • Spring bulbs can start going in now, ready for a colourful bloom in spring.
