Kitchen benchtop options

When it comes to choosing a kitchen benchtop, there is more to consider than just looks. Sure, you want your kitchen to look as good as possible, but you most likely want your benchtop to be durable and practical as well.

Here are some of the top options when it comes to choosing your kitchen benchtop:

  • Laminate – if you are on a budget, laminate is definite your best option. Brands such as Laminex and Formica offer options that can make your benchtop look like marble, granite or woodgrains at a much lower price. Laminate is long-lasting and easy to maintain, and although it’s inexpensive, it is not as hardwearing as some other options – it can scratch or cut easily and you shouldn’t put hot pots or pans directly on it or you risk damaging it. You also need to keep in mind that if the laminate is cut or scratched in any way, water and other liquids may find a way in and cause the board underneath to swell.
  • Granite/marble – a natural stone benchtop made of either granite or marble makes a stunning statement in the kitchen. They offer a timeless elegance that will impress all that come into your kitchen. Granite is very durable and will last for the life of your home. However, it needs to be sealed regularly and is one of the more expensive options. Marble takes the “most expensive” crown, but is extremely strong and durable. It also requires regular sealing.
  • Wood – popular in country-style kitchens, wood benchtops can look fantastic but can be quite hard to maintain in the long term. Softer woods can be damaged by moisture, while unprotected wood can be stained by foods or liquids. If you really like the look of wooden benchtops, bamboo is a great alternative.
  • Concrete – benchtops made of concrete are resistant to heat and scratches, but can chip and crack easily. It can be quite expensive to install due to its heavy weight.
  • Stainless steel – usually contained to commercial kitchens, stainless steel benchtops are making their way into homes around Australia. It can give an industrial vibe to a kitchen and is very low maintenance and hygienic. However, streaks and fingerprints will show up easily and it can also be easily scratched.
