Perth resident keeps walkway in full bloom

THE walkway near Booragoon resident Ian Backhouse’s house is looking beautiful, thanks to more than two decades of hard work.

Mr Backhouse estimates he has been maintaining the flowers and trees along the walkway between Allerton Way and Neesham Street for about 25 years.

“It all started because I like being outside and the walkway used to be full of rubbish,” he said.

“I started off with some ground cover before putting in some plants and these days it’s a place people take photos.

“There was one time when some council workers tried to poison the plants, but I asked them to stop and they said ‘if you are prepared to look after the walkway then it’s fine’.”

Mr Backhouse said it was the peak time for the flowers at the moment but in summer the flowers would die off.

“I probably spend about five hours per week in the walkway doing gardening,” he said.

“I’d love for the council to encourage more residents to look after their walkways in the same way.”
