Tips for preparing your home for winter

Although we’ve been enjoying quite unseasonal weather in Perth lately, winter is fast approaching and before we know it, we’ll be experiencing the rain, storms and cooler temperatures that this time of year usually brings.

With the higher risk of bad weather and severe storms, it is important to prepare your home to minimize any damage it may receive. And with temperatures about to drop, there are also ways you can keep the heat in so you aren’t freezing your way through winter.

Here are our top tips on preparing your home for the winter months:

  • With the risk of heavy downpours, you should make sure your gutters are clear to ensure that water can flow freely through them, minimizing your risk of flooding, leaks and water damage.
  • Check your roof for any missing or cracked tiles, as they may cause leaks inside your home during heavy rain.
  • If your home has a fireplace, you should make sure the flue is clear before lighting your first fire of the season. Clear out any ash that may be remaining from last year, and stock up on wood and kindling so you aren’t left high and dry when the temperature drops.
  • Perth is susceptible to severe storms at this time of year, so you should ensure you have a well-stocked emergency kit in the event of power outages. Make sure it includes items such as torches, batteries, candles, matches, blankets, a battery powered radio, water, a first-aid kit and non-perishable food.
  • If you have large trees with branches that hang over your home, cut them back or call a professional tree lopper. Severe storms and strong winds can cause branches to easily snap, which in turn could cause major damage to your home.
  • Check your windows and doors for draughts so that cold air isn’t sneaking its way in throughout the cooler months.
  • If you are going to be using a gas heater during winter, it’s a good idea to get it serviced to ensure it will run safely and efficiently.
  • If you have a pool, give it a good clean and install a pool cover to keep debris out.
