Decorating your child's bedroom

Decorating your child's bedroom

Decorating your child’s room can be a daunting task. After all this will be their sanctuary, the centre for their imagination, their special space as they grow and mature.

Not only do you want to make your child’s room a fun and creative space you also have to keep in mind how it will change with them – a pink princess room is fantastic for a five year old but not so much a teenager! You certainly don’t want to be redecorating all the time.

Fortunately, there are just a few things you need to keep in mind for children anywhere young to teen.

Furniture

When purchasing your child’s furniture keep in mind that it needs to be durable, safe and appropriate for their age. A classic mistake is to buy expensive furniture that your child will quickly grow out of, as that pricey customised car bed might seem like a great idea at the time but quickly becomes redundant.

If possible keep an eye out for furniture that can be repurposed or is adaptable for multiple uses, such as a small bed that can become a sofa. Safety is also a crucial factor to consider in your purchases, as sharp edges, glass surfaces, and easy to tip drawers and tables all create potential hazards.

Paint

Think creatively when decorating the walls! Bright colours bring a happy and fun feel to a child’s room, so leave the white paint at the door.

Paint is an easy thing to change as your child ages, but if you don’t want to hire a painter every few years maybe avoid the hot pink or overly childish hues. One way to brighten things up is with a vibrant feature wall balanced with a more neutral tone elsewhere. You can even use some chalkboard paint in one section for your young child to draw and your older child to use as a place for lists.

Flooring

A child’s room is not the place for marble or tiled flooring. Instead opt for soft carpet to cushion falls and protect young bodies at the crawling stage, or if you have harder floors opt for rugs to cushion the surface. Don’t splash out on the most expensive in stock though because with kids come spills and stains – there will probably be carpet repair and carpet cleaning in your future.

Make it special

Once the functional aspects are out of the way, think about your child’s interests amd age and decorate the room to make a fun and special space. How about some of these?

  • Adding glow in the dark stickers on the walls bring the outside inside
  • Frame artwork and photos in cute picture frames to liven up the walls and shelves with a personal touch
  • Deck out their room with their name, with decorative letters proclaiming their room as their own
  • Choose colourful bed covers that fit their interests and add vibrancy to the room
  • Get creative with storage space for their toys to be displayed
  • Put in fun removable wallpaper features on furniture to add interest and creativity to surfaces
  • Add a low-lying bookshelf for your child to store treasured books and knick knacks

All these factors will help you put together a bedroom for your child that is both safe and perfect for creating childhood memories.
