5 house jobs to do in Autumn

5 house jobs to do in Autumn

Who else cannot believe it’s autumn already? 2016 is speeding past in a blur and summer is already a memory.

Before we know it we’ll be back to shivery temperatures and early nights once again. Fortunately it’s still early days and we can still enjoy the 30 degree temperatures while they’re around! But the beginning of autumn is a timely reminder to get in some maintenance and preparation for the cold nice and early.

Here are some jobs it would be good to tick off your list this autumn season.

1. Update your outdoor lighting

With evenings getting darker it’s time to test or update your outdoor lighting. Entertaining shouldn’t die with summer! Look at your task lighting for safety and practicality – this is what you need for outdoor stairs, security, meal preparation areas and so on - and update your decorative lighting to jazz up your entertaining area and provide enough illumination for evening drinks. For lighting installation and advice, chat to your Look Local WA electrician.

2. Add autumn colours to your décor

Why not get into the spirit of the season and give your entertaining area a refresh as well? Autumn browns, golds, oranges and whites give the home a warm and friendly atmosphere. It’s super simple to update your theme – by replacing slip covers, throw cushions, rugs, bed and bath linens with autumn colours you can make the change in an instant.

3. Hang heavier drapes and curtains

There’s no point in heating your house in winter when all that energy goes to waste as the heat leaches out the windows. Get in early in autumn and replace light curtains with heavier fabric. Heavy lined fabrics which extend below the window frame will keep warmth in and insulate the house from the oncoming chill.

4. Install insulation or top up existing insulation

Is your house well insulated? If not get onto it now! Insulation can save you up to 40% in your heating and cooling bills according to yourenergysavings.gov.au It’s a great way to improve your comfort both in summer and winter.

5. Fill up cracks and gaps

How often do you think about the little faults in your house? Cracks and gaps in your home let all the precious warm air out and make you work harder to maintain the temperature in your house. It’s an easy fix though, you or a handyman can seal up gaps around your windows and doors and block up holes in the walls to prevent cold winds coming in.

Tick off this list and you'll be ready to entertain come whatever weather autumn brings us.
