9 Creative Uses for Wallpaper

9 Creative Uses for Wallpaper

For the creative home stylist, wallpaper is no longer a remnant of grandmother’s time but an exciting and stylish decorative medium! Despite the name, don’t limit your design flair to walls – think of it instead as a patterned decoration that you can use to add some excitement and elegance to any aspect of the home.

1)     Personalise your tables

Add a personal touch to your dining table and keep your living area fresh. Have a sheet of patterned wallpaper cut to size and lay it on top of your table, then cover with a sheet of glass. Your table will become the design centrepiece of your living area and what’s best? You can keep it fresh and new by easily switching wallpaper panels season to season.

2)     Decorate chairs and furniture

Vinyl wallpaper is tough and durable which makes it perfect for adding some chic appeal to boring kitchen chairs or dressers. Brighten the seat and armrests by adding some wallpaper strips and even mix up patterns chair to chair for an extra edgy vibe. Add patterns to the shelf fronts or the top of a dresser for an elegant appearance.

3)     Make an artistic display

Do you have a big white wall and nothing to fill it with? Wallpaper comes in so many creative designs and variable images it can be a piece of art on it’s own. Cut out some squares of different patterns, frame them and create your own artistic picture wall. Alternatively, why not create large feature panels? Below is a retro example of old newspapers printed onto custom wallpaper, together forming a mural.

4)     Take your stairs to the next level

Staircases take up considerable room and can make for a large plain area in amongst the rest of your stylish house. Make a statement by decorating your stair rises with wallpaper. Keep a constant pattern with calming neutral patterns or dramatic coloured chevron; mix and match different designs stair to stair; or even make one harmonious image over the entire flight.

5)     Spice up your shelves

Add a little extra to your bookshelves and storage areas by adding colour behind them. If you have a white kitchen or living area, think about some bold contrasting colours behind your shelves to give your room some life.

6)     Complement and contrast your cabinets

If you have old worn cabinetry or there is just too much white in your kitchen, think about covering and refreshing them with wallpaper panels.

7)     Dramatise an inset

Make your wall recess the major feature of your room. Use strong wallpaper to make the recess its own piece of art.

8)     Frame your fireplace

Adding a frame of wallpaper around your fireplace adds emphasis to it as a room feature and gives a modern feel to its presence in your home.

9)     Be creative with your ceiling

Be a rebel and use wallpaper on your ceiling instead of your walls. Dress up a room with an elegant soft print, make a design statement with bold colours or patters or turn a child’s bedroom into an imaginary wonderland with pictured panels.
