Avoid aggressive trees

Avoid aggressive trees

A great garden can be a major asset to a property - or a major disaster. When planning your yard always keep in mind that poorly planned trees can cause damage to your house and headaches later on.

The following are some problem trees to avoid planting close to your home:

  • Evergreen figs - these can both grow to a great size and also have highly invasive roots that damage pipe systems.
  • Poplar trees - roots will travel long distances to find moisture, damaging paving and fences.
  • Evergreen alder - another tree that grows to a large size, with roots that will lift up fences and destroy paving.
  • Rubber trees - these have large anchoring roots and are not suitable to be planted in a residential garden.
  • Camphor Laurel - these continue to self-seed and are extremely invasive.
  • Weeping Willow - these have a large, aggressively growing root system that can extend to three times the length of the tree canopy.
