Gardening Jobs to do in Autumn

Gardening Jobs to do in Autumn

Now that we’ve passed the constant heat of summer it’s time to take advantage of the mild weather to get stuck into the garden. To take advantage of your backyard you really need to plan seasons in advance, and now is the time for some pruning of some plants, planting of others for spring and preparing your garden for the colder months.

  • Firstly, make sure to rake up and relocate dead leaves that fall on your garden and lawn to your compost bin to prevent them smothering your plants. Mulched leaves are full of nutrients and are beneficial to your garden soil.
  • As the weather is cooling, now is the time to prune your hedges back and add some light fertiliser as needed.
  • Add some weed and feed to your lawn, aerate it with a garden fork and add a wetting agent to take advantage of autumn rain.
  • Once closer to the rainy months autumn is a great time for laying new turf so it can settle over winter, but make sure to remove any weeds and stones prior to sowing seed.
  • Make time to plant spring flowering bulbs, repopulate your vegie patch and plant new citrus and deciduous trees.
  • This season is also an excellent time to make new plants from cuttings of hardwood plants.
Tidy up your roses and spray them for black spot and mildew which can be particularly severe in autumn. Trim any dead sections of lavender that did not make it through summer and cut back geraniums.
