Home Maintenance Check List for Summer

Home Maintenance Check List for Summer

Don't let spring & winter weather leave you with damaging outdoor problems.

Life can be crazy with work and family but you still can’t let your home and garden get too far away from you.

Winter weather and spring rains will have given your outdoors a bit of a beating over the last several months and they are likely in need of some TLC.

We’re a stone’s throw away from summer now and with warmer, sunnier days it’s a great time to get some outdoors maintenance done. Here are 7 important outdoor tasks to check off this month to keep your home in good shape.

1.  Check your roof and gutters. Inspect your gutters to make sure they are not blocked, leaky, corroded or loose, and examine your roof to make sure no roof tiles are cracked, loose or buckling. If you’ve suffered some damage over the winter or in the spring rains engage a qualified roofer.

2.  Inspect your yard for any areas of pooled water from spring rains as these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other insects. Fill in any ditches or low lying areas, remove flower pots and buckets, put away wheelbarrows and any other items that have collected water and make sure to clean your birdbath regularly.

3.  Whip out the paint and spruce up inside and out. Now the weather is sunnier it’s a great time for you (or a painter) to put a fresh coat of paint on indoor walls or give the exterior of your house a facelift after it's suffered a hard season of rain.

4.  Get on to the weeding before summer. After the warm days and spring rains it's boom time for unwanted greenery, so get in now with your gloves and your weed and feed before your garden gets out of hand.

5.  Inspect your trees for any weak or damaged branches that need cutting back for safety. If they are high, engage a licensed arborist.

6.  Fix cracked pavement and concrete before weeds take advantage. You can purchase DIY patching and fillers for asphalt and concrete surfaces or for extensive damage engage a concrete servicer.

7.  Inspect your deck for water decay, damaged flashing and to ensure that it has maintained structural integrity, then pressure clean it to free it from accumulated mould and dirt.
