How to choose exterior house paint in 5 easy steps

How to choose exterior house paint in 5 easy steps

When you choose to redecorate the inside of your house you can go wild.

Want a bright red living room? Sure, it’s intense but if it’s super offensive in the end it just affects you. Plus it’s not too hard a job to redo it down the line.

The outside of your house is a different matter though.

Not only is it a really big job that you really don’t want to have to do all over again, it also affects not just you but the whole feel of your street. That’s a lot of pressure!

Your colour scheme can be planned for and managed though with a few simple tips.

1)      What colour are the fundamental elements of your home? This includes roofing, driveways, garage doors, outdoor paving and so on. Unless you’re renovating the whole kit and caboodle the colour you choose for the rest of the exterior should be harmonious with these pre-established tones.

2)      Consider your home’s style and the style of the street. Many streets will maintain a consistent tonal continuity so try not to clash with your neighbours or you will not be popular. Think about your architectural style as well and whether you want to break from the colours of that era – it can work when done right but can easily result in a jarring effect.

3)      Don’t just trust in paint chips. Not only do colours vary from how they appear on the chips but as an outdoor paint you need to see how the colour looks under different weather and light conditions. Paint a small inconspicuous part of your house and then monitor it at different times of day to see whether it works for you all the time.

4)      Choose paint shades that complement each other in the trim and field colours. Making the trim contrast with the field colour by having it a lighter or darker tone of the same colour family is the easiest way to go.

5)      Think of the inside of your house. Do you want a consistent theme and feel to the indoors and outdoors? That may affect your chosen colour scheme.
