Importance of cleaning your gutters

Importance of cleaning your gutters

Now that winter is finally over, you’ll probably find that your gutters are clogged with dirt and debris , and are possibly even growing weeds.

With warmer weather coming and the threat of bushfires during the hot summer months, it’s vital to clean those gutters out on a regular basis so make sure to put this job on the top of your to-do list for the coming weekends.

The main reasons you should keep those gutters clean include:

  • Proper drainage – gutters and downpipes ensure that any rainwater that falls is directed away from your home’s walls, foundations and landscaping. If they are clogged and cannot drain this water away, you risk flooding in your roof and around the foundations of your home. This in turn can lead to high repair costs if the problem is not dealt with promptly. Water build-up in your gutters can also cause them to collapse.
  • Pest control – clogged gutters are an open invitation to rats, mice, bees and birds, who will often find it a comfortable place to nest. Any standing water in your gutters will also provide a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Mould and mildew – if your gutters are clogged above the roofline, water can be pushed into your ceiling space and into the fascia of your home, causing mould and mildew to grow and the wood in your ceiling and walls to rot.
  • Bushfires – if you are in a fire-prone area, it is extremely important to ensure your gutters are clear. If they are clogged with debris and an ember lands in the gutter during a fire, it is a recipe for disaster.
  • Insurance – damage claims may be denied by insurance companies if your gutters have not been properly cleaned and maintained.

If you do not have time to clean your gutters yourself, simply contact your local gutter cleaning specialist.
