Selling tips for your car

Selling tips for your car

Thinking of selling your car? Just like with your house, putting a bit of effort into cleaning and repairing your old dear can pay off in the thousands. First impressions are crucial when showing off a sale item to potential buyers. Take a look at it yourself from all angles and think like a buyer – is there anything that stands out to you immediately? Here are some simple tips that can make all the difference.

1)    Fix the small details

Don’t pass off ‘minor’ problems. Any obvious fault, however small, can signal to a potential buyer that there might be more faults with the vehicle. Replace damaged windscreen blades, make sure your tires aren’t worn, change the oil and other little fixes to make it seem like new.

2)    Get it professionally checked

Not only is this ethical, but if your buyer is going to be taking it for a test drive any rattle or knock will signal a potential lemon. Take it to a licensed auto mechanic and get a receipt that you can show your buyers.

3)    Repair chips and dents

In that crucial first impression, chips, scratches and dents can present your vehicle as being old and damaged and affect the selling price. For small chips and nicks pick up a restoration kit from your local autoshop dealer for some DIY at home. For larger paint and dent damage look at taking it in to a professional auto panel & paint specialist – the last thing you want is a clearly mismatching paint job that you need to fix afterwards anyway.

4)    Clean and wax your car

This one might seem obvious but pay attention to the details! Don’t forget to clean the doorjambs (as these are the first thing you see as you enter a car), clean the windows inside and out, clean on and under the seats, the dashboard, vacuum the carpet and upholstery and wash the floor mats. Don’t forget the boot.

5)    Clear it out

The only thing that should be remaining in your car is the logbook and manual. Make sure to clean out the trash, empty the glove box and remove any keepsakes before showing the car to buyers.

6)    Restore it to standard

If you have modified your vehicle to customise it, consider reverting it to standard. Not everyone will have your taste and it may raise questions marks with buyers.

If you’re looking for the top price for your vehicle consider having it professionally detailed. Car detailing leaves your car in excellent condition and can add considerable value to your resale price.
