Tips for choosing the right window treatments for your home

When it comes to window treatments, there are so many options available that choosing can become a daunting task. Are you choosing purely for looks? Do you need to block out light, or are you trying to keep the heat in? Do you want window treatments that are low maintenance and easy to clean?

Here’s a brief rundown of some of the most popular window treatments available:

Curtains/drapes – curtains offer a more classic or traditional look than blinds. You could choose sheer curtains for rooms where privacy is not a huge concern – for example, in a main living area – or black-out curtains for bedrooms where privacy is more of a concern. Black-out curtains are more energy efficient – you can cool a room by closing them during the day in summer or opening them during the day in winter when the sun is out. They are also ideal for childrens’ or babies’ rooms where daytime naps are a high priority. The rod you choose for your curtain can also help change the look of your room.  A lighter rod will make things look more modern, while a heavier, decorative rod will give a more traditional look to the room.

Vertical blinds – a popular option due to a lower cost than some other treatments, vertical blinds can help add dimension to tall windows and doors. They are available in both fabric and vinyl, and there are plenty of options when it comes to colour. They are relatively low maintenance and easy to clean, and if one blind becomes damaged, you can simply replace that single blind instead of the entire treatment.

Roman blinds – these blinds cover the entire window or door area and fold upwards in an even fashion when you pull the cord. You can choose to open the blind to any height by simply tying the cord off at the side. Be aware that the top of the blind remains in place, forming a of pelmet when it is fully raised, so be wary of using them on windows you like to leave open. This is because wind will blow dirt and dust onto the back of an exposed blind, and rain will hit it, encouraging the growth of mould. Roman blinds are often made of heavy fabrics, which mean they can be effective at blocking out light.

Roller blinds –
these offer a cost-effective option and a no-fuss look. You can choose sheer or black-out blinds, and they can be hung in two ways: front roll, which hides the roll at the top of the window and back roll, where the roll is visible and the fabric needs to be the same on either side. Blinds that roll back sit closer against the window, providing better light control. Roller blinds can also be motorised.

Shutters – this option has been gaining popularity lately due to the classic look shutters offer while remaining very functional. Shutters are sturdier than blinds and will last much longer. Because of this, they can also be more expensive. Because of their longevity, you should be sure when choosing shutters that you can live with them for up to 20 years. Shutters can be installed both inside or outside the window - exterior shutters are a great option for those who need protection against the elements. Shutters can be made of a variety of materials including wood or vinyl, and are also available in a big range of colours.
