Tips for cleaning and maintaining your timber deck

Tips for cleaning and maintaining your timber deck

The days are getting longer which means one thing – it’s almost time for lazy days spent outside enjoying the warm sunshine and balmy evenings. If you have a timber deck, now is the time to give it a good clean in preparation for summer. It’s also important to keep the deck maintained during the hotter months and inspect it for any damage.

Here are our top tips for keeping your deck looking great this summer:

  • After months of cold, wet weather, it is vital to give your deck a good wash so that it does not grow mould or mildew, which can cause it to rot. It is best to do this on an overcast day so that the sun will not just evaporate the cleaner. Firstly, you’ll need to remove any debris that may have fallen between the boards – you can do this using a putty knife. Next, give your deck a really good sweeping to remove any loose dirt or dust.
  • Check the instructions on your deck cleaner as to whether your deck needs to be wet or dry. The easiest way to apply the cleaner is with a stiff-bristled broom or paint roller. Apply the cleaner, give your deck a good scrub, let it soak according to the instructions on the bottle and then thoroughly rinse clean.
  • Once your deck is clean, let it dry thoroughly and leave for at least two days before sealing.
  • Now is a good time to check your deck for any damage. You can fix rough, weathered boards using a sander. If any boards are water damaged, it may be worth replacing them. Loose boards and nails can also be easily fixed.
  • You should aim to reseal your deck every couple of years if it is undercover, or more often if it is in the sun for the majority of the day. Make sure you choose a time when fine weather is expected for at least two days.
  • The easiest way to seal your deck is to pour the sealant oil into a paint roller tray and apply using the roller.
  • During the summer, make sure to inspect your deck regularly for wood rot and cracks. Both should be dealt with immediately to prevent further, more costly damage down the track.
  • Keep an eye out for any bird droppings over the summer months. They will dry quickly, making them harder to remove. It’s best to hose them off as soon as possible to avoid any staining.
