Tips for planning your outdoor kitchen

The days are getting longer and the nights are getting warmer, which means one thing – it’s time for outdoor entertaining to make its welcome return. After all, there’s nothing better than inviting your friends and family over for dinner and a few drinks enjoyed under the stars.

But why not take it a step further and cook the entire meal outside? Visit any display home in Perth and you’ll see that outdoor kitchens are becoming increasingly popular as they are perfectly suited to our WA lifestyle. The size of your outdoor kitchen will of course depend on the space you have available, but with some careful planning you could easily create your ideal area outside for the barbecue, sink, fridge, stove and maybe even a pizza oven.

Here are our top tips to consider when planning your outdoor kitchen:

  • There are a few things to think about when picking the location for your outdoor kitchen. Since the majority of your outdoor cooking will probably take place in summer, you’ll want somewhere shaded from the hot sun. Plan your kitchen under existing shade, or plan to add shade in the future. If your budget doesn’t quite extend to a new patio, consider trees, large umbrellas or shade sails. You’ll also need to consider how to protect your outdoor kitchen from bad weather in winter.
  • You’ll also need to think about the likely direction of the wind. The last thing you want is barbecue smoke blowing straight back into the house through open doors or windows, or into a neighbour’s yard.
  • Consider your outdoor power sources. If you have existing power points, you will need to place your electrical items such as fridges or televisions within close proximity. Alternatively, you can plan to add new power points where needed.
  • If you want to go the whole hog and add bench space to your outdoor kitchen, you’ll need to ensure the materials you choose are weatherproof. Ask your local builder for advice on what materials are best to use.
  • If you have windows from your kitchen opening out to your outdoor area, consider making this an easy way to get food and cooking utensils out to the cook by adding a sliding flyscreen.
  • Lighting is an important element to consider – not only so the cook can see what they are doing, but also to create a cosy, welcoming atmosphere for guests. Task lighting above the barbecue and sink works well for the cook, while downlights above the dining area will ensure guests can see what they are eating.
  • With Perth’s hot summer temperatures, it may be worth considering installing ceiling fans in your outdoor kitchen as well – not only to keep guests cool, but to keep the cook comfortable while they are working with hot appliances.
